Fernando’s Review date: March 5, 2015
60 second review, so no score
You only have to say ‘red and white checked tablecloths’ and most Hong Kong residents know where you’re talking about. If in doubt, ‘chorizo’ or ‘sangria’ will clinch it.
Being called an institution isn’t always a compliment, but there’s no other way to describe Fernando’s and no trip to Macau ever really feels complete without a stop there. It’s been packing them in ever since it opened its gates in Coloane. Talking of gates, mercifully it wasn’t shut. We were just keen. Very keen.
Unusually for a restaurant review, I’m not going to bleat on about the food. If you’ve been, you know what to order. If you haven’t, then you can’t go wrong with any – or indeed all – of these:
It used to be a criminal offense to dine at Fernando’s and not order the chorizo with a jug of sangria. True story.
The helicopter view of a light lunch for two:
The long wall of banknotes and business cards. Note the subliminal advertising.
That’s all you need to know. As they say in Macau, bom apetite.
Praia de Hac Sa No.9, Coloane, Macau. Don’t even think about trying to book a table. Show up and put your name on the clipboard. http://www.fernando-restaurant.com/index_en.html
