Americanos in Sheung Wan has been on my list to visit for a few months now. The area has exploded with restaurants – Bibo, Upper Modern and many more are all within a minute’s walk. But Americanos is empty when I walk in at 1.20pm – completely empty.
It’s never a nice sight. To be fair, it’s not a restaurant but a burrito joint, but the point remains. By all accounts it was was started by three American guys who wanted to create somewhere with decent, affordable food.
The pork rice bowl is actually a paper plate where the swine is almost wholly MIA. Some kimchi (but of course), black beans, cucumber, mushrooms, tomatoes and grated cheese round it off. Surely some chilli, some lift of spice? Nada, as they say in Mexico. It’s pretty unimpressive stuff, neither especially Mexican nor Korean, fusion with an identity crisis. They have more dude food on the menu. Indeed, dudes (and only dudes) do turn up to try their burgers and burritos.
A side order of corn on the cob with cheese is lukewarm and also pretty difficult to eat. A glass of ‘agua fresca’ with cucumber and lime is good refreshing stuff on a scorching day.
I pay $140 for my lunch. Is it value for money, would I come back? Nope, on both counts. I’m afraid I can understand why it’s empty.
